Menopause - Natural Evolution
Menopause, the phase of life following women’s reproductive years, is believed to be an evolutionary adaptation. Historically, it enabled women to shift from a child-bearing role towards contributing to their community. Nowadays, women increasingly have the opportunity to participate in the world in any capacity, and to use this time as they wish.
Perimenopause, the transitional phase into menopause, is associated with various signs and symptoms. These are normal and temporary, due to gradually declining levels of oestrogen and progesterone. However, approximately 25% of women experience severe perimenopause symptoms. These may include hot flushes, mood and sleep disturbances, body aches and migraines, heavy periods and weight gain. Fortunately, there are many ways to manage these symptoms naturally.
Hot flushes and sleep disturbances, for example, are linked to stress. Supporting the nervous system can therefore help, such as through yoga and strength training, reducing alcohol and caffeine intake, maintaining a sleep routine, and ensuring adequate intake of nutrients such as protein and iron. Two key nutrients to assist with these symptoms are magnesium and taurine. They help reduce hot flushes and improve sleep by supporting production of the calming neurotransmitter GABA.
